The 168 Turnaround: Krispy Kreme And Catwoman–A Healthy Mix

A&E NEWS: July 31 – August 6, 2011

DOUGHNUT BURGER:  Sometimes “Bad For You” is just our super secret way of saying, “Tastes Like Winning.”  Or so we like to tell ourselves.  And yet I’m not sure I’ll be able to convince myself of success and rugged manliness if I were to (try to) eat the new Krispy Kreme doughnut cheeseburger.  That’s right—a burger with a Krispy Kreme doughnut for a bun.  The doughnut burger first hit the grill at the Calgary Stampede, but will now be available at the CNE in Toronto.  If you think your heart can handle the 1,500 calories, then I say go for the gusto.  What’s the worse that could happen?  I mean, aside from sudden cardiac arrest?  Personally, I think I’ll pass.  I’m already well on my way to being bald; Lord help me if I become bald AND fat.  Click here for more info.

THE SITTER:  A married couple I know recently walked out of a screening of Horrible Bosses because they found the film to be uncomfortably vulgar.  To that I say, “What did you expect?”  If you buy a ticket to a comedy and its rating is anything more than PG, then count on it being vulgar.  And so it is with a word of warning that I introduce the red-band trailer for Jonah Hill’s next comedy, The Sitter.  While the little skit before the trailer is (at best) rather tedious, it serves as something of an appetiser, whetting your palate for the main course—in other words, if you’re offended within the first minute, consider not finishing the video (it only gets worse, folks).  With all of that said, I do find the trailer pretty funny.  And, really, when is a movie not bettered by Sam Rockwell being in it?  Seriously, I’d watch anything he acted in.

CATWOMAN/SUPERMAN:  As a kid, I rarely read comic books, so my love of super heroes is (I suppose) somehow less valid.  Truly, had I not seen Spiderman or Superman or Batman on TV or in a movie, then I likely would know very little about them.  Still, I can’t help but look forward to the various iterations of their stories that continue to hit the small and big screen alike.  This week, we got our first look at Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman from the forthcoming The Dark Knight Rises and Henry Cavill’s Superman from the forthcoming Man of Steel.  To be honest, I’m not at all impressed with Hathaway’s costume.  The superman, shot, however…well, at the very least it looks dramatic and colourful.  Of course, the quality of the character is based on more than costume alone.  Still, these shots are interesting:

VIDEO OF THE WEEK: Safer Communities Together
This is about as random as they come.  Nevertheless, I can’t help but be amused by a police officer who gives very earnest advice on eating pie that’s been bought from a BP station.  For the full version, click here.

The 168 Turnaround is a week-in-review column, a place for me to reflect on the week’s most interesting pop culture news items.  If it mattered to me or I think it might matter to you, then it will be here.  If I’ve overlooked an important news item, or if you have a comment or question, please leave a response below.  Thank you for reading.
