I’m Sick—Bucking The Cold Blues

Opinion
By Z.S. Roe

I’m sick, but I’m pretty sure it’s just a cold.  Even so, this whole illness thing is pretty lousy.  But when you work in a shop that doesn’t have any heat, this sort of thing is bound to happen.  I mean, really, how many times can you poke a bear in the butt before it turns around and swipes your face clean off?

In any event, I’ve been spending the day in my apartment.  Generally, sick people are supposed to drink a lot of liquids and get a lot of rest.  I’ve drunk a lot of tea since this morning, but not much else.  And rest?  This apartment is not conducive to sleep and certainly not to naps.  Seriously, I dare you to try and take a nap in my apartment—you’ll just lay there and become frustrated.  It’s really weird.

What have I been doing?  Well, I’m glad you asked.  You see, years ago I used to spend my sick days reading Richard Laymon novels (think Stephen King, but without a conscience).  But it’s been a number of years since I’ve read one of those books, and I’m not really in a hurry to get back into it—for me, splatterpunk has lost its allure.  Now, I do … well, whatever I can think of.

So far, I’ve managed to watch two episodes of a cancelled but fantastic little British sci-fi series called Outcasts.  I’ve also caught up on the latest episode of The Walking Dead (man, is that show ever getting intense).  Oh, I also wrote, recorded, and filmed this stupid little music video:

What I’m really trying to say is that today on my day off, I’ve really done nothing at all, and this makes me feel unproductive.  I mean, I’m not near-death sick, just a little under the weather.  Part of me feels that I should be getting some real work done.  Then again, maybe I’m just being silly.

But what about you?  What do you do on a sick day, and do you feel bad if you don’t get anything productive done?

  2. I kind of want to make this my anthem for whenever I’m sick (like right now) and play it on an endless loop.
